I am really active over the last few weeks and I am really proud of all the feedback I got in the vote for features. So, before I am able to implement new exciting features, I have to do some work in the background. One part is dev-like (For those, who are interested: Make the download part reuseable….) and, because of the lack of space for new buttons a “new” UI. I really appreciate early feedback, so please compare the two pictures and tell me your opinion. One note, right now, then the pictures . The only thing which drops down is “Download”. You will understand, if you have a look at the pictures….

PS: I am sorry for the German UI, of course other languages are available. Currently translations to English, German, French, Spanish, Slovenian, Danish, Portuguese, Hebrew and Dutch are available. Your language missing? Comment, if you are willing to translate

In the last post, I asked you, what you want to have. I am going to try to implement every proposal with more than 5 votes. Feel free to keep commenting, what you want to have. It might find its way in the survey

A lot has been done during the last year. Currently this program has many exciting features, like

• Manager for all installed LibreOffice versions
• The ability to download 4 different up-to-date versions of LibreOffice
• Locating and helping to edit the bootstrap.ini file
• Translated in many languages

These features work really fine for Windows XP to Windows 8 and I really would like to add features. (Please click here to get to the LibreOffice ServerInstall GUI homepage) This post is to collect ideas, which features should be added. I am going to make a list of all possibilities right here. With all of the entries (which seems to be proper enhancements) I am going to make a poll. (Coming in a later post). So please comment, if your enhancement idea is not in the list yet:

• Adding possibility to download any version of LibreOffice
• Adding possibility to download any version of OpenOffice
• Adding possibility to download debug master build

It has been a reasonably long time since my last post, but there are a lot of things going on.

Beside of a Windows only game I am working for, LibreOffice Server Install GUI got continuous improvements. Currently the source of LibreOffice Server Install GUI is hosted at both, GitHub and LibreOffice repositories. It is planned not to host the binaries at the freehoster they are hosted currently in the near future. I really hope, that there are no access problems then.

BTW: During the next few months I am going to publish a so called “Fachbereichsarbeit” (pre-scientific paper) about OpenSource. I hope you like this paper, although it is written in German…

LibreOffice Server Install GUI v3.0 is an exciting release. It has a whole set of new features, some of them have been inspired by Harald Köster, who presented a list of 15! Items; HK means “inspired by Harald Köster”. So, let’s skip the quotations of people who made this possible and just list them up.

• With this version, downloading the latest master is possible again (There has been a change in the link on the LibreOffice side)
• Added a header to the built-in downloader. Hopefully I am going to get some statistics from the LibreOffice side….
• Version of the GUI can be determined now ( HK#4 )
• Hopefully it is now clear, what “Should a subfolder be created automatically” should mean… (HK#8)
• Shortcuts pointing to the soffice.exe of the last parallel installation can be created ( HK#10)
• Manager added ( HK #15 )
  • Parallel installations can be deleted with the manager ( HK#13)

I really hope that this program will help you to enjoy testing the 4.1 master and the 4.0 beta1 of LibreOffice.

I hope you are interested in how the development of LibreOffice Server Install works…

So, before we begin, I want to thank all of you, who proposed some features. Due to my skills I am only able to react on events inside the application. So, I am currently not able to do something like “on installation finished”…

Whatever, I got a great input, which I thought at first is impossible, but currently I think it is possible: Certainly a “manager” is a needed and now also possible wish for parallel installation of LibreOffice…. I hope that I am able to program this . So, do you have questions or ways to improve the program. I am open for input

By the way, this is my first developer statement, so it is quite short. Please comment questions and I am going to answer it in the next post of this series

I really want to give everyone one big chance, you just have to accept, that it is not perfect now, but you can help to improve the 4.0 release of LibreOffice…

So there are some ways:

1) You 100% know how you want to install a testing build properly

I will give you the links for alpha1+ and (just to be sure) a link to bugzilla, with me automatically added to CC…

2) You are not sure 100%  how you want to install a testing build properly or configure it.

I am going to show it using my program, but it basically is this tutorial.

• Download my program
• Press Download latest master
• Meanwhile:
  • Configure the installation directory
  • If you want to have a subfolder created automatically, check the check box. A name has been created automatically, but you can change it
• Click: Start installation
• After installation seems to be completed and you don’t want to have your profile used (and maybe damaged), click open bootstrap.ini and follow the instruction shown in the tool-tip  when hovering over the large texfield. (Don’t worry, you just have to copy one thing – so don’t worry)
• Open the folder you installed LibreOffice to and open the folder “program”. Double click soffice.exe and you are done.

Your LibreOffice 4 build has been installed parallel to your normal LibreOffice installation with a separate profile.

You can submit bugs in two ways:

• Directly in bugzilla
• With the assistant @ LibreOffice.org

After a long time of inactivity, here is something I have been working on for quite a long time. please, don’t be mad and download it. If there is an update, you will be updated within 7 days.

I am proud to present you my program “LibreOffice Server Installation GUI” with the following features:

• Ability to perform an admin / server installation [NOT Possible due to a bug in LibreOffice, but as soon as it is fixed it is working fdo#54304]
• Opening the bootstrap.ini and showing you the snipped, which should be changed
• Saving the bootstrap.ini with only one click (Administrative right might be compulsory!)

That’s it, but it might be a benefit to the QA team

So, just a few words to say: All the menus on the top are only visible when “Start” is pressed. All other menus are still visible. More info at the older post .

Last time [1] I wrote something about a touch UI. Now I got an idea of how the standard LibreOffice might look like:

The pic on the left shows the following:

• On the first pic you can see the most important change…
• The “Flexy” UI has exactly 4 options:
  • Where should the menu be displayed? (2 options)
    • Top/ Bottom ; Left / Right
  • Should the favorites be displayed Yes / No
  • Ribbon like menus or classic menus (On the draft ribbon like; no favorites when choosing standard
• When clicking on a menu, there should be a lot of buttons with pics used AND the arrangement should be easily changeable
• The help menu should have a “Copy build information” button –> Compare with GeoGebra…
• Like in b) There should be a button in the right bottom corner to pin  the whole thing –> Then it would be exactly like MS Ribbon + Favorites

The pic on the right is quite the same…

• On the top the menu is shown vertically on the left side.
• b) shows the menu
• And in the bottom you can see an example configuration..
  • Have a closer look to the “Format” dialog. The favorite is the font selector –> Not only buttons should be possible, everything should….
    • Keep in mind: “Format” is a rather short word, so the width can be quite high, but you can easily change it with 4 settings

On every sideshow, which is shared via slideshare, there is one major problem: “There are no plans, how the LibreOffice Android UI should look like” (Don’t start searching, this is not a quote!)

What I wanted to say: I (not involved in either the UI or design team [if you want the reason, have a look at my drawings later on....], created a few hand-drawn sheets. This might be a way, how the LibreOffice Touch UI should look like. I have not and won’t ever talk of a “mobile device” or “Android” or “iOS” UI [@offtopic: but I would like to see iLibreOffice....]. Windows 8, which might success on tablets as well as on handys and (hopefully) on the normal desktop, is the reason why I am talking of a “Touch UI”.
